On the morning of October 24, our group held the groundbreaking ceremony for the 35MW geothermal power plant, constructed and operated by Kaishan, in the renowned Menengai geothermal area of Kenya. The ceremony also included the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the green ammonia project. His Excellency William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, attended the ceremony along with members of his cabinet, including Dr. Opiyo Wandayi, the Minister of Energy, to witness the signing by representatives of both parties.
The 35MW geothermal power project, developed by Orpower TwentyTwo Limited, a subsidiary of Kaishan Group, is also known as the Menengai III Geothermal Power Project. It is located in the Menengai geothermal area of Nakuru County and is part of the larger 3×35MW Menengai geothermal project, with the final owner being the Geothermal Development Company (GDC). Previously, Kaishan’s subsidiary acted as the EPC contractor for the Menengai I Geothermal Power Plant, which has been in operation for over a year and has received high praise from industry experts and local stakeholders for its outstanding performance, earning the reputation of "Kenya's best-performing geothermal power plant."
President William Ruto delivered an enthusiastic speech, highlighting the importance of sustainable energy development in achieving Kenya's Vision 2030. He stated, "Investing in renewable energy is efficient, reliable, and sustainable. The launch of this 35MW power plant project demonstrates our country's immense geothermal potential and our commitment to driving economic growth, fostering public-private partnerships (PPPs), and accelerating economic transformation. Investors like Kaishan exemplify the value of government collaboration with the private sector in attracting foreign direct investment and creating jobs for young people. Through their investments, we gain energy, job opportunities, and industrialization, resulting in a win-win outcome."
Dr. Tang Yan, General Manager of Kaishan Group Co., Ltd., also gave a speech, briefly introducing Kaishan's innovative achievements in the geothermal field. He stated that the Menengai III Power Plant would mark Kaishan's second milestone in Kenya, and the project is expected to be fully completed and achieve COD (Commercial Operation Date) within 14 months. "This is the Kaishan speed and efficiency, continuing to showcase the technological advantages of Kaishan's modular geothermal power plants."
During the ceremony, President Ruto also witnessed the signing of an MOU between Eng. Peter Njenga, Managing Director of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), and Dr. Tang Yan, Managing Director of Kaishan Group. The MOU outlines cooperation in sustainable green ammonia production, where Kaishan will utilize KenGen's unused steam in the famous Olkaria geothermal field to produce green electricity, with the final products being hydrogen and 200,000 tons of liquid ammonia annually. The project is expected to have a total investment of $540 million. Once completed, it will represent multiple milestones: the first fertilizer plant in sub-Saharan Africa, Africa's first green fertilizer plant, and the world's first geothermal hydrogen/ammonia production project. This will further transform Kaishan into a green energy company. Most importantly, the project will support Africa's green industrialization, promote agricultural development in East Africa, and reduce the government's financial burden on fertilizer subsidies by producing domestic green fertilizer.
President William Ruto expressed his full support for this initiative, which ensures food security and creates jobs without increasing the carbon footprint. He remarked, "I am very excited that today we are signing an agreement to produce the first batch of hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizer for our farmers within 24 months using the geothermal resources here. I am pleased that Kaishan has announced that the company will achieve this goal within 24 months."
Dr. Tang Yan stated, "As a global leader in hydrogen and process gas compressors, we fully support the President's vision for green industrialization and renewable energy, and we are committed to participating in the process of Africa's green industrialization as advocated by the President. With the strong support of His Excellency, we will work together to complete this great project and create a new landmark for Africa's green industrialization."
At 10:30 a.m., President Ruto officially launched the construction of the power plant by starting the excavator.
Kaishan Group Holdings Chairman Cao Kejian, along with leaders from the Hydrogen Energy Division, Geothermal Power Plant Division, Green Ammonia Division, and Austrian subsidiary LMF, which provides hydrogen compressors for the green ammonia project, participated in the event. Kaishan is determined to lead the way through innovation and cooperation with outstanding local companies, carrying the core mission of "contributing to the conservation of the Earth" and continuously growing and developing under the guiding core value of "technology drives the future."
